Resolution 71:3

Memorial Resolution for Elder Emery Lorance

Our Covenant Keeping God

Emery Lorance was born in Chicago on March 4, 1914, and went home to be with his Lord on March 7, 2006. He is survived by daughters Lori Young and Cynthia Sayles, son Rod Lorance, and many grandchildren and great grandchil- dren.

He graduated from Springfield, MO, high school, attend- ed Southwest Missouri State, El Camino, and Glendale col- leges. He earned a degree in business management from La Salle Extension, University of Chicago.

Professionally, he worked in the insurance business, with Hardware Mutuals of Minnesota as fieldman in 1949 and as supervisor of Los Angeles agents in 1952. He joined an inde- pendent agency in 1955. He was a member of the P.I.A. and the I.I.A. Association. He was president of the I.I.A. of Glendale, CA, in 1978/79 and a member of SAFECO President’s Council in 1988.

And yet his educational and professional accomplish- ments formed only a small part of his life work.He was a philatelist (i.e. one who collected postage stamps and stamped envelopes). He was the organizer and manager of regular stamp shows where stamp dealers would display their collections for sale or trade. Each year he would give out wallet size calendars with advertising for the Five Star Stamp Show, where many stamp dealers would display their wares. When he was unable to handle the boxes of stamps himself, he would have someone drive him and carry the boxes of stamp displays.

His civic accomplishments include work with the Boy Scouts, YMCA, Rotary Club (where he was an editor of RotoService), member of the Verdugo Club, member of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce, and member of the Board of Governors of the Glendale Symphony Orchestra. He received “Outstanding Record of Personal and Civic Leadership” in a resolution from the Honorable Patrick Nolan and Honorable William Ivers.

While in Springfield, MO, he met the love of his life, Margaret, who became his wife and compan- ion in life and in business until her homegoing in 1972. Emery gave her credit for her spiritual influ- ence in his life. Emery and Margaret joined the Bible Presbyterian Church of Long Beach in 1961 where he served faithfully as elder and church treasurer. After moving to Glendale in 1972, Emery faithfully continued in his attendance and service in Long Beach and also attended the Bible Presbyterian Church in Glendale.

He was an active member of the California Presbytery, and later the Southwest Presbytery, of the Bible Presbyterian Church as an elder delegate. He was the first moderator of the Southwest Presbytery. In addition to his service in the church and in the presbytery, he frequently was an elder delegate to the Bible Presbyterian Synod, with representatives from all over the country. Most recently, he was delegate to the Bible Presbyterian Synod of 2002 in Lakeland, FL. He was a member of The Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions for 40 years. This mission board has sent forth and supported missionaries faithful to the Word of God since 1934. Many Bible colleges, medical clin- ics and churches have been established and continue at this time because of the work of those mission- aries and that missionary agency. He was also a faithful supporter of the 20thCentury Reformation Hour and the ministry of Dr. Carl McIntire.

Our Covenant Keeping GodEmery was very hospitable. Many missionaries stayed at his place while traveling through the area. Emery was a family man who loved and was loved by his family, friends and especially by all the children. Emery Lorance was a man of many talents, many accomplishments, and of faithful service in civic affairs and to his Lord Jesus Christ. “Enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.”

Adopted by the 71th General Synod of the Bible Presbyterian Church,
meeting in Cape Canaveral, FL, August 2-7, 2007.
